Rooster is a private messenger. This policy explains what data the app handles, why, and the choices you have. It is written to match how the app actually works.

What we collect

  • Account: your email address, a password (stored only as a salted hash), your display name, and (if you choose to add it) your phone number.
  • Messages and calls: your one-to-one and group messages are end-to-end encrypted. Our servers relay and store them as ciphertext we cannot read. Calls are peer-to-peer where possible; our servers help set up the connection but do not record calls.
  • Media: photos, videos, voice notes and files you send are encrypted and stored so the people in your conversation can receive them.
  • Contacts (optional): if you turn on contact discovery, phone numbers from your device address book are hashed on your device and only the hashes are sent, so we can tell you which of your contacts already use Rooster. We do not upload your raw contact numbers or names.
  • Notifications: a device push token so we can alert you to new messages and calls.
  • Assistant features: when you use the built-in assistant (smart replies, translation, rewriting, summaries), the text you ask it to work on is sent to our server and to Google’s Gemini API to produce the result. Do not use these features on anything you would not want processed by that service.

How we use it

To sign you in, deliver your messages, calls, and media, let contacts find you if you opt in, send notifications, and provide the assistant features you invoke. We do not sell your data or use your messages for advertising.

Who it is shared with

  • Google: Firebase Cloud Messaging for push notifications, and the Gemini API for assistant features you use.
  • No one else, except where required by law.

Security

Messages are end-to-end encrypted, the on-device message store is encrypted, and all network traffic uses HTTPS/TLS. Because your messages are end-to-end encrypted, we cannot read them and cannot recover them for you if you lose your device and keys.

Your choices and data deletion

You can turn contact discovery and phone findability on or off in Settings. You can delete your account from the app; deleting your account purges your account data and messages from our servers.

Children

Rooster is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes

We will update this page when our practices change and revise the date above.
